Marah's Services

and why we need to develop them

Marah was not set up to be just a drugs project but as a facility for all marginalised people in Stroud. The aim remains the same now as it was then: to respond to the areas of greatest need as dictated by the clients.

Marah's established 'drop-in' caters for in excess of 120 people a week of whom around 80% currently have issues with substance misuse and the figures are growing monthly. It has been established that Stroud’s figures for drug related crime are only minimally less than in larger towns such as Cheltenham where there is a range of services available including day programmes, residential rehabs and dry houses. These facilities, particularly in terms of stage 3 and 4 treatment* are almost non-existent in Stroud.

Far too many people in this area who use mood altering chemicals are unable to access help for their addiction, either as a result of not being able to secure funding, not being willing or able to leave their homes and families, or simple because the places are not available for them.

To this effect it is planned that during 2007 The Marah Trust will set up the Moving On Project, a Day Centre opening for 5 days a week, incorporating a Structured Day Programme, Relapse-Prevention Programme and a long term Reintegration Programme with a series of client led vocational and occupational Follow on Projects

However as the plan for a day centre develops, it is envisaged that many of the future facilities and projects will also be of benefit to the other 20% of Marah's drop-in clients who are not substance dependent but have other reasons for isolation in society such as physical / mental health issues, loneliness or other special needs.

* Please see our Recovery Page for an explanation of these treatment stages

There is no charge for any of Marah's services.
